Install Expert Lotto on Arch Linux

To install Expert Lotto on Arch Linux(and other Linux distributions), you must install the Oracle JDK version. If you install and use the OpenJDK open source version(s), some of the program’s features will not work. Since there are no package manager options on Oracle’s website for Arch based distributions, you can use the following setup below to install Java. This install setup is for a system-wide integration. This means Java will be available to all users on the system.

Important note: When using terminal commands listed anywhere on the internet, if your not sure what they do, then always backup any important files before you use them. I’ve included a brief description of what each terminal command does.

1. Download the Linux “x64 Compressed Archive” file(e.g. jdk-26_linux-x64_bin.tar.gz) from the Oracle.com website into your /Downloads folder.
2. Then open a system terminal(e.g. Bash, Konsole etc.) and enter the following commands exactly as shown in red below. Your system administrator password will be required for the “sudo” commands;

sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/jvm - Creates a folder called “jvm” in the /lib folder.
sudo tar -xzf ~/Downloads/jdk-26_linux-x64_bin.tar.gz -C /usr/lib/jvm – Unpack the file directly into the /jvm folder.
sudo pacman -S java-runtime-common – Download and install the "java-runtime-common" package. This will setup the necessary system-wide integration. It is a trusted package that is listed in the official Arch Repository.
sudo archlinux-java set jdk-26.0.1 – Use this command to set the JDK version to use on the system.
java --version – If Java is installed correctly, this will list the version information.

3. Download the Linux Expert Lotto version “expertlotto-linux.sh” into the /Downloads folder, and make this file executable by using one of the the following two options;
Option 1...Terminal: chmod u+x ~/Downloads/expertlotto-linux.sh - Grants execute permissions only for you as the file owner.
Option 2...Desktop GUI(e.g. KDE Plasma): Go to your /Downloads folder and mouse right-click on the expertlotto-linux.sh file and select; Properties→ Permissions tab→ and under the Execute: permission, check mark → Allow executing file as program”. - Grants execute permissions only for you as the file owner.

The information on the web for installing Java can be very confusing, especially if your not familiar with Linux. I tried many different ways to automate installing Java in the way the OpenJDK package does. I also tried to avoid using the terminal as much as possible, but unfortunately the easiest/fastest way I found was to use the setup above. At least it doesn’t require editing hidden configuration files.

I have tested this setup on CachyOS Linux with zero issues, but it should also work on other Arch based distributions. There are also other ways to setup Java using AI generated scripts or Arch User Repository(AUR), but unless you know what they do and how they work, it’s probably safer to just manually install it. I also didn’t explain sudo/admin permissions, how to change Java versions or specific terminal command flag details. So if there is any more information needed or issues installing, let me know and I can reply to or update the topic.

Side note: For anyone wondering if Expert Lotto is better on Linux than on Windows(...MAC?),...in my experience, Linux can be slightly faster or slower depending on the Linux setup and distribution. However, the Expert Lotto UI does seem to be a lot more responsive and configurable in Linux. 8)
